What Porter Fixer does

Automated accessibility remediation for existing PDFs

Porter Fixer analyses and remediates existing PDFs against WCAG and PDF/UA requirements, helping organisations meet applicable European Accessibility Act requirements.

  • Comprehensive remediation: Corrects document structure, tags, reading order and metadata, and adds missing accessibility information.
  • Dozens of accessibility checks: Covers document language, descriptions, headings, bookmarks, links, and alternative text for images, charts and graphs.
  • Efficient at any volume: Automated remediation is faster and less expensive than manual editing and scales from individual files to large document volumes.

Limitations: Some accessibility issues require changes to the document’s source or visual design, such as complex tables, chart colours and insufficient colour contrast. For recurring documents produced from structured data, Porter Original creates accessible PDFs correctly from the start.

Scanned documents: Porter Fixer does not yet perform optical character recognition (OCR). PDFs containing scanned text must be processed with OCR before being uploaded.

What makes a PDF accessible?

An accessible PDF can be read, understood and navigated by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboards or other assistive technologies. It has a logical reading order, properly tagged headings and content, meaningful links, alternative text for informative visuals, and sufficient colour contrast.
